CHESTER, Pa. – The Widener men's basketball team saw its five-game winning streak come to an end against Alvernia after the Golden Wolves put together two late rallies in the second half to win, 88-83, on Tuesday night in MAC Commonwealth play at Schwartz Athletic Center.
Despite their winning streak being snapped, the Pride are still in a tie for fifth place in the MAC Commonwealth with Albright and Stevenson at 6-9. More importantly, the Pride are still one game behind Messiah for the fourth seed in the upcoming MAC Commonwealth Tournament after Messiah lost to Hood, 69-54, on Tuesday night. The top four teams in the conference standings will earn a home game in the quarterfinals of the tournament.
Jared Peters paced the Pride in the defeat, dropping a game-high 25 points.
Matt Daulerio added 14 points and
Kenny Lewis chipped in a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds for Widener.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST ALVERNIA
- The Pride led by as much as 17 against Alvernia after breaking open a two-point halftime lead by going on a 19-4 run to take a 58-41 lead with 14:32 remaining. Peters and Daulerio scored seven points apiece during the run.
- However, Alvernia managed to take a 64-61 lead by going on a 23-3 run over the next five minutes.
- The Pride put together another run of their own, outscoring the Golden Wolves, 14-5, to take a 75-69 lead with 4:33 left. Peters and Kolbey Woodard paced the Pride with four points apiece during the run.
- Unfortunately, the Golden Wolves went on a 15-4 run to take an 84-79 lead with 48 seconds left.
- The Pride tried to make one last comeback effort, as they consecutive layups from Lewis and Peters to cut Alvernia's lead to one. However, the Golden Wolves made a layup off a fast break following Peters' layup to go back up, 86-83.
- The Pride had a chance to tie the game and force overtime, but unfortunately missed a three-pointer with five seconds left. Alvernia then tacked on the final two points on a pair of free throws following an intentional foul by Widener off the missed three-pointer.
- Peters' 25 points put him one point away from moving into 19th place on Widener's all-time scoring list. The Reading, Pa. native, who now has 1,138 points for his career, trails Kris Clarkson, who had 1,139 points from 2002-06.
- Lewis recorded his ninth career double-double and fourth one this season for the Pride.

The Pride will host Messiah in a huge MAC Commonwealth game on Saturday. A win over Messiah would allow Widner to clinch the fourth seed for the MAC Commonwealth Tournament. The game, which is also Senior Day, will tip off at 3 p.m.
