Late Three By Steven Matlack Sends Pride On Top

Dunn earns double double of the season

CHESTER, Pa. – A late pair of three points pushes Widener men's basketball on top against non-conference Centenary 74-72.
 
Following the thriller, the Pride move to 7-4 and remain 2-2 in MAC Commonwealth play.

  • Steven Matlack dropped 17 points to lead the Pride with Dominic Dunn hitting 16.
  • Dunn grabbed 11 rebounds and earns a double double in points and rebounds.
  • Pat Holden threw nine assists and co-led the team along Matlack in steals with three.
  • Defensively, Kevin Schenk blocked two Cyclone shots.
HOW IT HAPPENED IN THE SCHWARTZ CENTER
 
In a late post semester game, the Pride went shot for shot against the Cyclones. The first half turned into a two-point game going into halftime with the Pride on top 36-34. From the floor, the men shot 15 of 37 (40.54%) and drained three three-point buckets. Holden and Matlack helped grab 19 rebounds to the Cyclones' 18.
 
Coming out of halftime, Widener shot 14 of 28 (50%) in field goals and 4 of 9 (44.4%) from beyond the arch. The teams battled hard in the second and each dropped 38 points in the second. The Blue and Gold saw 17 rebounds from missed offensive Cyclones' shots and defensive Pride shots. For the duration of 60 minutes, the lead changed 11 times and became tied four times with a crucial change in the final seconds. A quick three from Dunn sent the Pride to a one-point deficit with 42 seconds remaining. After a missed layup, Matlack drove and hit a three to give the Pride a 74-72 advantage with three seconds on the clock. The team credited 40 points in the paint, 20 points off turnovers, and saw nine second chance points.
