Women’s Basketball Secured First Conference Victory Against Eastern

Gianna Samuels sinks 18 points

ST. DAVIDS, Pa. – Widener women's basketball topped Eastern and earned their first MAC Commonwealth victory on Saturday afternoon with a 60-52 score.
 
Following the victory, the Pride move to 3-7 in regular season play and put a slash under conference standings 1-3.

  • Gianna Samuels led the Pride with 18 points while junior Jordan D'Ambrosio followed closely behind with 17.
  • In rebounds, Mia Robbins grabbed 13 free balls.
  • Defensively, D'Ambrosio put up a pair of blocks and steals.
HOW IT HAPPENED IN ST. DAVIDS
 
As the time ticked down the time for Eastern to answer lessened. The first quarter opened the scoring run for the Pride as they dropped 15 points to Eastern's eight. The team shot 7 of 11 (63.64%) from the floor and dropped a three-point basket. In the second, the ladies shot 4 of 14 (28.57%) in field goals and tallied another three-point basket. After the missed shots, Widener grabbed 23 loose balls and helped turn them into points. The Eagles closed the gap to eight going into halftime to make the score 28-20.
 
Coming out of halftime, the Blue and Gold stayed consistent in points with a pair of 16 points in the third and fourth quarter. The third saw 6 of 13 (46.15%) and another three-pointer. D'Ambrosio and the team snatched three offensive rebounds and four defensive ones to the Eagles six. In the last quarter, the Pride shot 5 of 9 (55.56%) from the floor and added six points on free throw attempts. The team saw 30 points in the paint, 10 points off Eagles turnovers, and 15 points off of missed offensive shots.
 
UP NEXT
Widener takes a week break and returns back home on Saturday, December 17th against Wilkes in a non-conference matchup. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
