READING, Pa. – Widener men's basketball earned its first MAC Commonwealth victory in a thrilling fashion against Alvernia on Wednesday evening.
Following the over-time win, the Pride advance to 5-2 in regular season play and open conference play 1-0.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Graduate student Dominic Dunn got hot in his 43 minutes of play and drained 20 points and picked up 10 rebounds.
- Kevin Schenk followed closely behind with 15 points and led the team in rebounds with 12.
- From the bench, Xavier Ernest saw five points, a rebound, and a steal.
HOW IT HAPPENED ON THE JACK MCCLOSKEY COURT
The Pride started off slow in Reading, Pa. with a 10-point deficit going into halftime. During the first half the men shot 8 of 30 from the floor and 2 of 15 from the three-point line. From the free throw line, the team saw 8 of 11 shots fall and grabbed 21 rebounds to Alvernia's 18. Over the course of 20 minutes, Widener cut the lead down to 10 to go into halftime down 36-26.
Coming out of halftime, the Pride pushed through their first half holdups and out shot Alvernia by more than 25%. Off of missed shots, the team grabbed 20 rebounds and traded back and forth for the lead four times. From the floor the team shot 18 of 29 and went 5 of 9 for three. At the end of regulation, the score sat at 78 apiece, so a 5-minute overtime was played to settle the game.
In overtime, the Blue and Gold came out victorious with a two-point edge over the Golden Wolves. Over the course of the five minutes the Pride shot 1 of 3 from the floor and drained a three. Topping off the night was seven points from the free throw line. Over the night, the Pride found 30 points in the paint with 17 points being credited turnovers. After 65 minutes of play and a thriller in OT, the Blue and Gold edge out the Golden Wolves 78-76.
