Men’s Soccer Claims MAC Commonwealth Win Over Eastern

Fatiga scores first-half goal to help Pride go 2-0 in conference play

CHESTER, Pa. – Sean Fatiga scored a goal in the first half and the Widener men's soccer team made it hold up as it topped Eastern, 1-0, in its MAC Commonwealth match Wednesday night at Elizabeth J. Hirschmann Field at Leslie C. Quick, Jr. Stadium.

The victory put the Pride at 2-0 in conference play for the first time in over 16 seasons. The Pride also improved to 6-4 overall on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST EASTERN
  • The Pride and the Eagles battled back and forth for the majority of the game. The Pride controlled about 59 percent of the possession, but Eastern outshot Widener, 19-17, in the contest.
  • Fortunately for the Pride, Fatiga gave them the lead in the 27th minute after scoring off an assist from Monsif Atify for his fifth goal of the season.
  • From there, the Pride fended off Eastern's nine shot attempts in the second half to come away with the win.
  • Ryan Van Pelt and Kyle Stone combined on the shutout. Van Pelt made seven saves while Stone stopped four shots in net
UP NEXT
Widener will be back in action on Saturday when it heads to Annville, Pa. to take on Lebanon Valley in a MAC Commonwealth match. Kickoff for that game is at 4 p.m.
