CHESTER, Pa. –
Steven Matlack banked in a three-pointer from three-quarters court at the buzzer to lift the Widener men's basketball team to a 66-63 overtime victory over Mary Washington in non-conference action Wednesday night at Schwartz Athletic Center.
Matlack's buzzer beater helped the Pride improve to 6-8 on the season and snap their four-game losing streak.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST MARY WASHINGTON
- With the game tied, 63-63, Matlack earned his chance to win it at the buzzer after Mary Washington missed two shots in the final 30 seconds of overtime. After Kevin Schenk rebounded the second missed shot by Mary Washington, he passed it to Matlack, who heaved the ball from the right side of the court just outside the three-point line on the Widener end of the floor and the ball banked right into the hoop off the glass.
- Matlack finished with seven points on the night. Pat Holden led all scorers with 17 points, while Matt Daulerio added 13, Jared Peters put in 11, and Schenk chipped in 10 in the victory.
- Before Matlack's game-winning shot, the Pride managed to rally from a 54-42 deficit by going on a 15-3 run in the final 4:59 to force overtime. Daulerio capped the run by hitting a floating jump shot with five seconds left to tie the game.
- Jared Peters is inching closer to becoming the 28th player in Widener history to score 1,000 career points. The graduate student from Shillington, Pa. needs three points to reach the milestone.
