CHESTER, Pa. – The Widener University men's soccer team faced visiting Babson College in its season opener on Saturday evening, but ultimately fell to the Beavers 2-1 in a tightly contested battle. The match marked the Pride's first regular season contest since November 2, 2019.
The two sides fired off a combined seven shots in the first half, but weren't able to connect as both teams entered halftime scoreless. It was Widener who struck first in the second act. After successfully defending a Babson corner,
Stefano Turano found a sprinting
Sean Fatiga up field who chipped the ball over the Beavers' goalkeeper to put WU on the board. Babson quickly responded with a score two minutes later to even up the tally. The Beavers then tacked on one more in the 85th minute and held onto that narrow advantage as it dealt the Blue and Gold its first setback of the season.
Widener looks to bounce back tomorrow, September 5, as it closes out the Garnet Alumni Classic with a home contest against Immaculata. Kick-off is slated for 3 p.m.
