Football Powers Past Albright to Remain Undefeated

Pride push record to 4-0 with road victory

READING, Pa. - The Widener University football team rushed for 232 yards delivered another strong defensive effort to beat Albright, 21-7, on Saturday afternoon on the road and remain undefeated on the season.

The dynamic one-two punch of Shawn Thompson and Bryce Casey rushed for 185 of the 232 yards on 25 carries. Thompson ran for a game-high 101 yards — the first 100-yard game of his career — and a touchdown on 19 carries, while Casey added 84 yards and a touchdown on six carries.

Casey provided the first touchdown of the game after bolting for a 43-yard score with 8:20 left in the first quarter. Then, quarterback Sean Mullarkey ran for a 1-yard  score that capped a 13-play, 43-yard drive to make it a 13-0 Widener lead that it took into halftime.

In the second half, Albright cut the lead to 13-7 midway through the third quarter, but the Pride extended the lead to 21-7 with 2:54 left in the period following a Thompson 1-yard plunge into the end zone.

From there, the Pride defense shut out Albright's offense in the fourth quarter to put the exclamation point on the victory, which put Widener at 4-0 for the first time since 2014. It also marked the 25th time in program history that the Pride started a season 4-0.

The Pride defense allowed only 173 total yards of offense and made three sacks on the day. Brayden Strouse led the defensive effort, making a game-high 10 tackles, two sacks, three tackles for a loss, and one pass breakup in the victory.

Of Note
  • The win was the 714th victory in Widener's football history.
  • Mike Barainyak earned his ninth win as head coach.
