CHESTER, Pa. - The Widener University football team's chance for an undefeated season ended on Saturday, as it dropped a 27-3 contest to FDU-Florham on Elizabeth J. Hirschmann Field at Leslie C. Quick, Jr. Stadium.
The Pride fell to 4-1 on the season and 2-1 in MAC play with the defeat.
Looking to start 5-0 for the first time since 2014 when it went 10-0 in the regular season, the Pride held FDU-Florham to three points in the first quarter. However, the Devils put up 21 points in the second quarter to take a 24-3 lead into halftime.
The Blue and Gold finally got on the scoreboard with 8:37 remaining in the third quarter after
Larry Eimer kicked a 20-yard field goal that capped a 10-play, 61-yard drive. The field goal was set up by an 18-yard reception by
Zack Vanscovich, an 11-yard run by
Bryce Casey, and three rushes for 18 yards by
Danny Dutkiewicz.
But, the Devils made a field goal with 2:19 left in the period to extend the lead back to 24. Neither team scored in the fourth quarter.
The Pride still lead the all-time series against the Devils, posting a 21-4 record since it began on Nov. 9, 1993. The Pride have won 20 of the last 22 games since 1996.
Of Note
- The Pride still managed to get to the quarterback, making six sacks on the day. Terence Thompson led the team with two sacks, while Nick Werkheiser had one and a half sacks, Mario Scotese and Mike Pawlowski each had one sack, and Brayden Strouse had a half sack.
- Anthony Liberatoscioli led the Pride with 10 tackles, making six solo tackles and four assisted tackles.
- Thompson topped the team in tackles for loss with three and a half.
- Tevin Hill had the longest catch of the day for the Pride, making a 56-yard reception on a third-and-17 play from Triston Harris in the fourth quarter to get to the FDU 35-yard line.
- Jordan Baxter had two quality kick returns for Widener, making a 55-yard return on the opening kickoff and a 31-yard return following FDU's first score of the game.

Widener hits the road next Saturday to play Alvernia in its fourth conference game of the season. Kickoff is set for noon.
