YORK, Pa. – In a battle between two of the conference's top teams, the Widener University field hockey team faced its first MAC Commonwealth opponent of the season in York College of Pennsylvania. The Pride fought down to the final minutes, but narrowly fell to the Spartans by a score of 2-1. The match marked the first ever meeting between the two schools.
After controlling much of the offense in the first quarter, York struck first on a penalty corner with just under five minutes remaining in the opening period to take an early 1-0 lead.
Madi Radnoff was the first to crack the scoring column for the Blue and Gold. She took a penalty corner from
Bryn Marcavage and buried it home as time expired in the second period to even up the tally entering halftime. With the goal, Radnoff moved to seventh all-time in goals for Widener, tying Meghan Garvey (2012-13) with 25 for her career.
The Pride stayed in the match despite being out shot by the Spartans 22-2 due in large part to the stellar play of first year goalkeeper
Kylie Haberstroh. Haberstroh came up with a career-high 11 saves and allowed just two goals for a save percentage of 84.6 on the day.
Helena Ramos also came up with a huge defensive save at the 10:49 mark in the fourth period to keep the score locked at one.
However, the Spartans finally ended the deadlock with 4:55 remaining in regulation and would hang on to that narrow advantage as time expired to deliver the Blue and Gold its second setback of the season.
