CHESTER, Pa. – The Widener University men's soccer team faced visiting Susquehanna University in its sixth non-conference contest of the season, but ultimately fell to the River Hawks by a score of 4-2. The match marked the first ever meeting between the two teams.
The Pride controlled much of the offensive attack in the first half, out shooting Susquehanna 10-5. After a River Hawks goal to open the match in the eighth minute, it was
Stefano Turano who found the scoreboard first for the Blue and Gold with his first goal of the season at six minutes remaining in the half. Turano won a battle for possession on the near sideline and, in a highlight reel worthy display, weaved his way through four defenders en route to a top shelf score.
Sophomore forward
Sean Fatiga was the next to find the goal column in the second half's opening minutes. First year
Michael Donaghy sent a pinpoint cross from the end line to give Fatiga a well-positioned opportunity for a header and put WU up 2-1. However, two minutes later ,the River Hawks evened things back up at two all with a score off a throw in. Susquehanna regained the advantage not long after in the 61st minute. Despite a late Widener push, the River Hawks would never relinquish the lead and added an insurance goal in the 88th minute to seal the victory.
The Pride next sees action on Wednesday, September 22 when it travels to Neumann University for its final non-conference road game. Kick-off from Aston is scheduled for 4 p.m.
