Women’s Volleyball Wins Two Matches at Rowan Quad

Pride tops Catholic, Morrisville State over the weekend

GLASSBORO, N.J. - The Widener University women's volleyball team posted wins over Morrisville State and Catholic University during a quad match over the weekend at Rowan. 

The Pride rallied to beat Catholic in five sets, 22-25, 17-25, 25-22. 25-11, 15-9, on Friday night. On Saturday, the Blue and Gold began the day with a comeback win over Morrisville State in five sets, 25-19, 19-25, 23-25, 25-20, 15-8, then fell to host Rowan in four sets. 

The pair of wins put the Pride at 6-1 on the season — their best start to a season since 2008 when they went 7-1.  

HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST CATHOLIC 

  • Lilyanna Martucci led the Pride with a season-high 16 kills, while Shannon Toomey added 11 kills in the win. Toomey posted a .450 hitting percentage while Martucci hit a .424 clip. 

  • After dropping the first two sets, the Pride pulled out the close victory in the third set after closing the set with two kills from Toomey and earning a point following an attack error on Isabella Ricevuto's serve. 

  • Leading, 8-6, in the fourth set, the Pride closed it with a dominating 17-5 run.  

  • Holding a 7-5 advantage in the last set, Widener went on an 8-4 run to notch the victory. Toomey had three of her 11 kills in the set.  

HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST MORRISVILLE STATE 

  • Toomey topped the Pride with 10 kills. Widener had eight players with over four kills in the match. 

  • Dutterer totaled a match-high 26 digs for the Pride. 

  • Barthol handed out a team-best 23 assists.  

  • Widener opened with a victory in the first set by breaking a 9-9 tie midway through the set by going on a 15-10 run.  

  • After dropping the next two sets, the Pride tied the match at 2 after overcoming a 12-10 deficit by closing the match with a 15-8 run.  

  • In the fifth and final set, the Pride used a 7-0 run to overcome a brief one-point deficit and closed with a 6-2 run to earn the victory.   

  
UP NEXT 
Widener heads back to Chester to host Messiah on Tuesday night for its first MAC Commonwealth match of the season. Match starts at 7 p.m.
