CHESTER, Pa. – The Widener University softball split its doubleheader against No. 25 Stevenson on Sunday, falling 5-2 in the opener and winning 2-1 in game two.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Lindsey Cooper went 4-for-7 at the plate. She also scored a run and recorded an RBI.
- Carli Benozich went 3-for-6 at the plate, knocking out a game-winning home run and notching two RBI.
- Malia Calciano also picked up three hits.
- Jennifer Sieminski picked up the win in game two to advance to 7-4 this season. She allowed no earned runs, scattered just four hits, and struck out seven batters.
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME ONE
Stevenson went up 4-0 after four innings. Widener got its first run in the bottom of the fourth when Cooper reached second on a single and a Mustangs error and was sacrificed home by
Becca Tiley. Down 5-1 in the bottom of the seventh,
Jalia Lawrence was walked and reached second on a Benozich single. Cooper knocked a hit into left field to plate Lawrence and make the tally 5-2. However, a strikeout on the next batter ended the game as Stevenson took the opener.
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME TWO
The Mustangs took an early 1-0 lead off a Pride error in the opening frame. Both sides were held scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning.
Becca Buckman was walked and reached second on a groundout. With two Widener outs, Benozich knocked out a home run to left center field to put the Blue and Gold up 2-1. Sieminksi held onto that lead in the final two frames as the Pride secured the win.
