Women’s Volleyball Hangs Tough Against Eastern

Pride pushes Eagles to four sets in defeat

CHESTER, Pa. - The Widener University women's volleyball team battled hard against MAC Commonwealth leader Eastern on Wednesday night, winning one set before it succumbed to the Eagles, 18-25, 17-25, 25-20, 13-25, in their conference match at Schwartz Athletic Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST EASTERN
  • The Pride (13-6, 1-3) came out hard against the Eagles (18-1, 5-0) in the first set, as they took a 3-1 thanks to a kill by Shannon Toomey, a kill by Isabella Ricevuto, a point off an attack error by Eastern. The Pride held the lead at six different points in the set (3-1, 5-4, 14-13, 15-14, 16-15, 18-17) before Eastern rallied to win the game. In the set, there were five lead changes and 10 tie scores.
  • After Eastern took the second set, the Pride pulled out its victory in the third game to force a fourth set after matching Eastern in kills with 11 and taking advantage of the Eagles' 11 attack errors in the set. Before the Pride's win in the third set, Eastern had won nine straight sets.
  • Ricevuto led the Pride with nine kills and three aces on the night, with two of her kills and two of her aces coming in the third set.
  • Megan Barthol and Sydney Nichols had a solid night setting up the Pride attack, dishing out 13 assists apiece for the Blue and Gold.
  • Rachel DiCarlo led the Pride in digs with 13.
