READING, Pa. – The Widener University men's soccer team played its first MAC Commonwealth match of the season at Alvernia on Saturday afternoon, but ultimately fell to the Golden Wolves by a score of 2-0.
Alvernia struck first in the 17th minute when a cross snuck through the hands of Widener's keeper and gave Golden Wolves forward Gabe Wunderlich an open look on net to make the tally 1-0. 20 minutes later, AU was awarded a penalty kick and capitalized to extend its advantage to two.
The Pride made a strong effort to close that gap in the second half, outshooting Alvernia 6-3, but the Golden Wolves would never relinquish its lead en route to a 2-0 victory.
