READING Pa. - The Widener University women's volleyball team has earned a spot in the MAC Commonwealth Championship after sweeping Albright, 25-13, 25-21, 25-17, on Tuesday night on the road.
With the win, the Pride earned the fifth and final seed in the conference tournament, giving them their first appearance in the tournament since 2018 and third appearance in the last five seasons. The Pride are 4-3 in MAC Commonwealth play and are now 19-8 overall.
The Blue and Gold will kick off the MAC Commonwealth Championship by facing fourth-seeded Messiah in a play-in match on Nov. 1. The winner will travel to either Stevenson or Eastern, which are still battling for the No. 1 seed in the tournament.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST ALBRIGHT
- The Pride cruised to a win in the opening set after going on an 11-3 run to close it. Shelby Motz led the way by notching five of her seven kills in the set.
- In the second set, the Pride overcame two deficits in the match (10-6 and 16-15) to pick up the victory. Shannon Toomey paced the Pride with three kills.
- In the final set, Widener scored the final five points of the match to secure the win. The Price received four kills apiece from Lilyanna Martucci and Emily Miller during the set.
- Carly Venit led the Pride in kills and blocks on the night, making eight kills and two blocks.
- Megan Barthol topped the Pride in assists with 16. Sydney Nichols added 12 assists for the Pride in the victory.
- Madeline Dutterer made 17 digs to lead the pride in that category. Motz made 13 digs as well in the win.
