CHESTER, Pa. - The Widener University women's volleyball team honored seven seniors —
Madeline Dutterer,
Maddie Keller,
Shelby Motz,
Sydney Nichols,
Alnisha Saintilus,
Carly Venit and
Emma Wilcock — before its match against Stevenson on Thursday night at Schwartz Athletic Center.
The Pride went on to drop a tough match to the Mustangs, 25-15, 25-21, 25-18, in front of a crowd of 218 people. The loss put the Pride at 19-9 on the season and 4-4 in MAC Commonwealth play, while the Mustangs improved to 24-4 on the year and 7-1 in conference matches.
Before the match, Dutterer, Keller, Motz, Nichols, Saintilus, Venit, and Wilcock were recognized for their efforts they gave to the program over the last four seasons. They have been a part of 44 wins and qualified for the MAC Commonwealth Championship two times, including this season as the fourth seed.
The seniors were introduced one-by-one along with members of their families and received flowers from head coach
Donovan Anglin and the coaching staff.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST STEVENSON
- Playing against one of the top teams in the MAC Commonwealth, the Pride came close to knocking off the Mustangs in the second set. Trailing 18-9, the Pride went on a 10-4 run to cut the deficit to 22-19 before Stevenson scored three of the next five points to win the set.
- In the final set, Widener overcame an 8-4 hole to tie the game at 15. Unfortunately, the Mustangs went on a 10-3 run to win the match. Shannon Toomey paced the Price during the rally in the middle of the set with two kills, while Saintilus and Emily Miller each had a kill.
- Toomey led the Pride with eight kills. The first-year player's eight kills put her in 20th in the MAC Commonwealth with 151.
- Megan Barthol surpassed the 500-assist plateau on the season, as she had nine assists on the night to put her at 503 on the year.
- Madeline Dutterer made 14 digs to lead the pride in that category. Dutterer's digs allowed her to move into the top spot in the MAC Commonwealth in total digs (483) and digs per set (4.78).
UP NEXT
Widener will kick off the MAC Commonwealth Championship by facing fourth-seeded Messiah in a play-in match on Nov. 1. The winner will travel to top-seeded Eastern for a semifinal match next Wednesday.
