Women's Soccer Delivers Seventh Shutout of the Season vs. Hood

Carman and Koch find scoring column in 2-0 decision

CHESTER, Pa. – The Widener University women's soccer team climbed to fourth in the MAC Commonwealth standings after shutting out Hood College by a final score of 2-0 on Friday night. With the win, the Pride advances to 7-4 overall and 2-2 in conference play.

GAME NOTES
  • First year forward Alyssa Carman delivered her conference-leading ninth goal of the season and dished her first career assist to finish the evening with three points. She still sits atop the conference leaderboard in goals and points (19).
  • Melissa Koch netted her first score of the season.
  • Sophomore defender Emily Friel dished her first assist in a Blue and Gold uniform.
  • WU held a 26-7 advantage in shots over the Blazers.
  • The shutout marks Widener's seventh clean sheet of the year - the Pride has held its opponent scoreless in every one of its wins so far.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • WU got off to a hot start, firing off seven shots in the first 20 minutes.
  • The Pride finally connected on shot number 11 in the 38th minute. The Blazers launched a free kick into their offensive zone, but Friel headed the ball right back to a sprinting Carman. Carman beat two defenders and took a shot from the corner of the box that went over Hood's keeper to make the tally 1-0.
  • That goal got the offense going and Koch delivered on another score just five minutes later. This time, Carman intercepted a Hood goal kick and lofted a one-touch pass to Koch who fired the ball in top right.
  • The Blue and Gold protected its two goal lead through the second half as the defense held the Blazers to just four shots while Widener goalkeeper Samantha Coon made three saves.
