Women’s Volleyball Tops Alvernia in Thriller

Pride beats Golden Wolves in five sets

CHESTER, Pa- The Widener University women's volleyball team pulled out a five-set victory over Alvernia, 25-23, 23-25, 25-13, 25-22, 15-12, in their MAC Commonwealth match on Tuesday night at Schwartz Athletic Center. 
 
With the win, the Pride improved to 15-7 overall and 2-3 in MAC Commonwealth play. 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST ALVERNIA 
  • The Pride battled back and forth with the Golden Wolves in the first set, as the match featured 10 ties and four lead changes. With the set tied at 23, the Pride finally took the game after Shannon Toomey made a kill to take the lead and they scored off an attack error by Alvernia. 
  • After Alvernia took the second set, the Blue and Gold rolled to a convincing win in the third set after registering 11 kills, three blocks and two aces while taking advantage of nine Alvernia errors. Alnisha Saintilus led the way in the set with four kills and two blocks. 
  • After the Golden Wolves won the fourth game, the Pride pulled out its victory in the fifth-set tiebreaker in thrilling fashion. Clinging to a 13-12 lead, the Pride scored the final two points of the match, thanks to Emily Miller making a kill and Shelby Motz delivering a kill for the match point.  
  • The Pride tallied a season-best 57 kills on the night. Saintilus led the Pride with 14 kills, while Toomey added 13 in the victory.  
  • The Pride also set a season-best in assists in a match with 54. Megan Barthol led the Blue and Gold Megan Barthol led the Blue and Gold with 28 assists, while Sydney Nichols handed out 16 in the victory. 
  • The Pride also got great defensive production, making 72 digs — the third time this season they had over 70 digs in a match. Madeline Dutterer made a career-high 30 digs and Barthol added 11 for the Pride. 
 
UP NEXT 
On Thursday, Widener hosts the Pratt Institute in its annual Dig Pink match — a match in which the team raises money for The Side-Out Foundation to go toward research to find a cure for patients who have metastatic breast cancer. Match is set for 7 p.m. For those who want to help the Pride raise funds toward this campaign, please click here
