Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Pratt in Dig Pink Match

Pride picks up win while raising funds for breast cancer research

CHESTER, Pa. - The Widener University women's volleyball team picked up a non-conference win over Pratt on Thursday night, sweeping the Cannoneers, 25-23, 25-18, 25-12, in its annual Dig Pink match at Schwartz Athletic Center. 
 
With the win, the Pride improved to 16-7 overall and 14-4 against non-conference opponents this season.  
 
While the win was nice, the Pride helped raise funds for The Side-Out Foundation and its Dig Pink® program. Funds raised for Side-Out go toward research specifically for patients with metastatic breast cancer, the most advanced form of the disease, and the least funded area of research. 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST PRATT 
  • The Pride battled won the opening set in thrilling fashion, overcoming a 17-8 deficit by going on a 17-6 run, including taking the last three points of the set on a kill by Shelby Motz and two attack errors by Pratt.  
  • Trailing, 11-10, in the second set, the Pride came away with the win thanks to a 7-1 run midway through the set and a 7-2 run to close it out. Motz had two kills, while Alnisha SaintilusShannon ToomeyRachel DiCarlo, and Emily Miller each had one during these two runs.  
  • In the third set, the Pride rolled to the victory by making 10 kills and three aces while taking advantage of 12 total errors by Pratt.  
  • Toomey topped the Pride in kills with eight, while Saintilus and Motz had six apiece in the win.  
  • Megan Barthol led the Blue and Gold with 15 assists, while Sydney Nichols handed out 12 in the victory. Barthol surpassed 400 assists for the season, as the sophomore has 414.  
  • Madeline Dutterer made 14 digs to lead the Pride in that category. The senior libero leads the MAC in digs with 381. 
 
UP NEXT 
Widener hits the road next Wednesday to face Lebanon Valley in a MAC Commonwealth match. Match is set for 7 p.m.
