CHESTER, Pa. - The Widener University women's swimming team opened its 2021-22 season by sweeping its relay meet with MAC foes Stevens and Stevenson on Saturday at Schwartz Athletic Center.
The Pride posted a 196-34 win over Stevenson and a 170-22 victory over Stevens, the 2019-20 MAC champions.
The Pride earned their victories after winning seven of the nine relay events.
The Blue and Gold kicked off the meet by receiving a 1-2 finish in the 150-yard butterfly, as the "A" team of Mia Ruggiero, Olivia Downs, and Angelina Franceschini combined for a time of 1:24.16 and the "B" team of Salley Meyers, Tori Freiling, and Gina Mecca followed with a 1:29.76.
Then, the Pride won the 150-yard breaststroke, 500 freestyle, 400 medley, 200 freestyle, 300 individual medley, and 400 freestyle.
In the 400 medley, Durboraw, Meyers, Emma Reistle and
Sophia Sapnas combined for a time of 4:23.35 to claim victory in that event. In the 200 free, Downs, Schwerzler, Sapnas and Luckey posted a 1:47.52 to beat out Stevens' relay team by four seconds.
Two events later, the Pride won the 300 IM after Schwerzler, Kalsbeek, and Ruggiero combined for a time of 3:12.14. Then, the Pride capped the meet with their victory in the 400 free, thanks to Rankin, Reistle, Franceschini, and Kalsbeek touching the wall in 3:52.38.

Widener will be in action again on Saturday, Oct. 23 when they travel to face Albright in a dual meet. Meet is set for 1 p.m.
