Boxscore 2 AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Widener University baseball team closed out its spring trip to Florida by splitting a double-header with Chatham, falling 7-6 in the opener and taking a 2-1 victory in the nightcap.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Matt Samson had three hits on the day, knocking in two RBIs and homering in game one.
- Kyle Brex posted three hits and a RBI, tripling in the first matchup.
- Stephen Posner also chipped in with three hits.
- Joey Norton grabbed the win in game two, allowing just one earned run through seven innings and striking out seven batters.
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME ONE
After Chatham scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the first, Widener got one back in the bottom of the inning when Brex reached on an error and scored three batters later on a
Justin Costanzo single.
As it has done often on the trip, the Pride scored in bunches, posting five in the third inning. With one out,
Brandon Reis singled and came in to score when
Matt Samson hit his second homer of the week. The inning continued when
Tommy McParland walked and
Stephen Posner singled. An error allowed a run to score and another one came home on a Brex triple.
Daren Wood singled to right, bringing home Brex to push the lead to 6-1.
The Panthers battled back, scoring one in the fifth, two in the sixth, and one in the seventh to tie the game before scratching across the winning run in the eighth.
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME TWO
Trailing 1-0 into the fourth, Widener got on the board as Costanzo was hit by a pitch and moved to second when Reis got on base via an error. A sacrifice advanced the runners before a fielder's choice by
Andrew Yates brought Costanzo home. After Yates moved to second on a wild pitch,
Aaron Nuble singled him home for a 2-1 WU lead.
The Pride hung on to the advantage through the next three innings to roll to its fifth win of the season.
