CHESTER, Pa. – Led by a triple-double from
Jared Peters, the Widener University men's basketball team defeated Hood 82-68 on Sunday afternoon to extend its win streak to four and move to 7-0 in conference play.
PETERS' TRIPLE-DOUBLE
- Jared Peters posted his first career triple-double with 16 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists. He is the 15th player in Division III to achieve the feat this season.
- The last time a Pride player accomplished this feat was on January 6th, 2018 when Ryan McMahon put up 10 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists against Messiah.
- It was the first triple-double by a MAC Commonwealth player since Montaque Wright had 25 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists for Stevenson against Messiah on January 9th, 2019.
- The 14 rebounds and 10 assists both represented career-highs.
GAME NOTES
- Connor Laverty scored 24 points, tying a career-high he set against Albright in the previous game. He also grabbed nine rebounds, five of which came on the offensive glass.
- Steven Matlack (13) and Elijah Boyd (11) also tallied double digits in the scoring column.
- For the fifth game in a row, the Blue and Gold had four or more players record 10+ points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Pride established dominance early, going up 10-1 after the first four minutes of play. Laverty's 12 points and four rebounds in the first allowed the Blue and Gold to keep the Blazers at arm's length and enter halftime with a 43-35 lead.
Widener remained hot in the second act, opening up a 15-4 scoring run on five made three-pointers to put it up 63-47 and prompt a Hood timeout at the 14:11 mark. The Blazers clawed back and pulled within three in the final minutes, but the Pride was able to retake control and hang on to the victory to remain undefeated in the MAC Commonwealth.
