@WidenerFHockey Improves to 5-0 After Defeating Virginia Wesleyan

CHESTER, Pa. Margaret Howe-Consiglio scored twice, leading the Widener University field hockey team to a 3-1 victory over the Virginia Wesleyan University Marlins on Saturday afternoon.

The Pride improved to 5-0 for the first time since 2007.

Highlights
  • The goals marked Howe-Consiglio's second and third of her freshman season, giving her eight points on the year.
  • Lexie Eberly fired a laser of shot past the Marlins keeper for her second goal of the year.  She also made a crucial defensive save in the fourth quarter, diving across the crease with her stick extended, stopping the shot and keeping the Pride's lead at two goals.
  • Sabrina Roberto was solid in the cage, finishing the contest with eight saves.
  • Widener outshot Virginia Wesleyan 18-11.
How it happened
WU wasted no time, striking within the first minute of regulation. Howe-Consiglio received a pass up the middle of the field from Jesse Schlosser and beat the Virginia Wesleyan goalie low, giving the Pride a 1-0 edge. Roberto stopped two shots in the first quarter. Still up by one heading into the second, the Blue and Gold kept its foot on the gas. Howe-Consiglio scored again nearly two minutes into the quarter. Widener entered halftime with two-goal advantage.

The Marlins got one back in the third quarter, narrowing the deficit to two. The Pride responded quickly with Eberly's goal coming two minutes later. Strong defense on both ends kept the score 3-1 until the final whistle.
