CHESTER, Pa. – Four members of the Widener University women's soccer team found the back of the net on Friday night, propelling the Pride to a 4-1 victory over the Aggies of Delaware Valley University.
It did not take long for WU to start the scoring, beating the Del Val keeper five minutes into the contest.
Lexi Slusher recorded Widener's first goal of 2019. A little over a minute later,
Alex Polon made it 2-0 in favor of the Pride. The Blue and Gold defense stood strong, holding the Aggies scoreless in the first half.
With the game clock at 52:47,
Alyssa Dionisio capitalized on a penalty kick, marking the senior's first two points of the 2019 campaign. Delaware Valley got one back in the 57th minute, narrowing the deficit to two. Widener later put the game out of reach with a goal in the 70th minute. The final 20 minutes of action saw zero goals as the Pride went on to carry its 4-1 lead to the final whistle.
Some Things to Note
- Four goals is the most for Widener in its opening game since the 2016 season when the Pride bested Eastern 4-3.
- Ashton Houbary notched her first collegiate win in net for WU.
- Friday night was the first time since September 6, 2017 that four different players scored a goal in one game. Slusher and Abby Fenton had one that night and Dionisio assisted on two, leading the Pride to 6-4 win over Rutgers-Camden.
