CHESTER, Pa. – The Widener University men's soccer team outshot Penn State Abington 14-6 on Friday night, grinding out a 1-0 victory over the Nittany Lions to kick off the 2019 campaign. This was the third consecutive season for the Pride that began with a win.
Tight throughout, both defenses made it difficult for either team to generate much offense. The Abington keeper made some terrific saves to keep the game knotted at zero heading into the intermission. The Pride fired off seven shots in the first half.
Widener came out aggressive in the second, wasting little time before striking first.
Peter O'Connor played a low ball across the box to the feet of
Devon Santos. The senior midfielder did not squander the opportunity, burying a shot into the back of the net and giving the Pride a 1-0 advantage. The Pride backline was solid all contest, frustrating attackers and playing physical soccer.
John Warwick recorded his first shutout of the year, marking a great start to his senior season.
