CHESTER, Pa. – Jesse Schlosser scored the lone goal of the game late in the third quarter as the Widener University field hockey team topped Swarthmore in its season opener, 1-0 on Friday night.
 
BY THE NUMBERS

• The victory was the first for the Pride against the Garnet since a 3-1 win on September 1, 2016.
• Jackie Daniels set up Schlosser's goal.
• Widener held a 15-4 advantage in shots including a 7-2 edge in shots on goal.

 
HOW IT HAPPENED

• Despite some early chances due to a trio of penalty corners and a 7-0 difference in shots.
• As the game remained scoreless late into the third period, the Blue and Gold took the ball at midfield and pushed down the pitch. Daniels got into position in front of the net and sent the ball to Schlosser through a scrum. The sophomore pushed the ball into the back of the cage, giving WU the lead.
• Early in the fourth, the Garnet tested the defense, but a defensive save by Holly Bradley and a save off a close range shot from Sabrina Roberto helped to preserve the win.
