Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Collective Effort Pushes @WidenerLacrosse Past Hood

FREDERICK, Md. – Nine different players found the back of the cage for the Widener University men's lacrosse team in a 15-8 victory over MAC Commonwealth opponent Hood College on Saturday afternoon. The Pride sit at 3-1 in conference play.

Highlights
  • Gavin Kirkwood scored four goals on six shots.
  • Brady Franks had a goal and an assist, giving him four points on the day.
  • Connor Heisman beat the Hood keeper twice and assisted on one goal.
  • Jason Higgins tallied his first point of the year with a goal in the fourth quarter. The senior defenseman also scooped four groundballs.
  • Kenneth Watts won 18 of his 23 faceoffs, picking up nine groundballs along the way.
  • Carter Landry and Matt Horton split the playing time, combining for 12 saves throughout the day.

How it happened
  • Brady Franks started it off with a goal at the 13:54 mark in the first quarter.
  • The Blazers fired back nearly two minutes later.
  • John Dunbar and Kyle Groark went back-to-back, giving the Pride a 3-1 lead with a little over 10 minutes left in the first.
  • Hood cut the deficit to one, but three straight from the Pride to close out the quarter pushed the Blue and Gold's lead to four entering the second.
  • Hood brought it to within two after scoring two goals during a one minute and five second window.
  • Kirkwood created a little more breathing room for the Pride, making it 7-4 six minutes before the intermission. WU walked into the locker rooms up three.
  • Heisman got it going in the second half off an assist from Nick DiIorio.
  • The Blazers would not go away, scoring two unanswered and narrowing the margin to two goals.
  • Alternating goals by each team, initiated by Franks, followed by a Hood score, then ended by Heisman, saw Widener up 10-7 heading into the final quarter.
  • The Blazers scored their eighth just before the 10 minute mark, but that would be the last time a Widener keeper would be beaten.
  • WU ended it in style, kicking off a 5-0 run with nine minutes remaining and capping it off at the 46-second mark.

Up next
Widener returns to Quick Stadium on Friday, April 12 for a 2018 MAC Commonwealth Championship game rematch against the Stevenson Mustangs beginning at 7:00 p.m. It will be alumni night for the Pride.
