Boxscore 1 | Boxscore 2 AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Widener University baseball team was upended in a doubleheader by the Mount Union Purple Raiders on Thursday afternoon, dropping the opener 7-4 before falling 12-4 in the nightcap.
 
BY THE NUMBERS

• Matt Samson and Daren Wood each had three hits in the twinbill.
• Stephen DeBellis drove in two runs.
• Tommy McParland posted two base knocks in the opener.

 
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME ONE

• Trailing 4-0 heading into the bottom of the third, the Pride clawed back in the game as Dylan Morrissette walked to lead off the inning and moved to second on a single by Daren Wood. A fielder's choice put runners at the corners with one out for Matt Samson who smacked a single into left center, plating Morrissette for the first run of the frame. Two batters later with Samson on second and Brennan Taylor on third, Stephen DeBellis singled to center, scoring both runners, cutting the Purple Raiders lead to 4-3.
• After Mount Union scored in the top of the fourth, Widener answered back as singled from Greg Elfreth and Morrissette put a pair on. Elfreth used his wheels to steal third and later came across the plate on a wild pitch, slicing the lead to 5-4.
• The Blue and Gold got no closer as the Purple Raiders posted a run each in the sixth and seventh to seal the final.

 
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME TWO

• MTU took early command of the game with six runs in the first inning.
• Samson and Wood provided the majority of the offense for the Pride with two hits each.
• Kyle Laing made his season debut, opening his career with three scoreless innings before allowing a run in the fifth.
• The two teams traded four run frames in the sixth inning to create the final score.
