HARRISBURG, Pa. – Three players finished in double figures, leading the Widener University men's basketball team to a season-opening 70-57 win over the Mt. Aloysius in the Penn State Harrisburg Tipoff Tournament on Saturday night.
Highlights
- Elijah Boyd led the Pride in scoring with 16. He added eight boards and two assists. He was perfect from the line, 8-8.
- Kenny Lewis nearly notched a double-double, recording 15 and nine.
- Pat Holden dropped 13 points on 67 percent shooting. He went 3-4 from deep.
- The Pride shot 82.8 percent from the line, going 24-29.
- WU outrebounded the Mounties 41-32.
- Points in the paint were the difference maker. Widener won the battle down low 28-18.
First Half Notes
Mt. Aloysius jumped out to an early 8-2 lead. Lewis and Holden cut the deficit to one at the 17-minute mark. Lewis gave WU its first advantage three minutes later. Tight throughout the half, the teams were even at 15 near the midway point. A 10-3 run by Widener spanning nearly six minutes put the Pride up six.
Jared Peters made a layup with 16 seconds left as the Blue and Gold entered the intermission with a 33-26 edge.
Second Half Notes
The Pride never looked back, maintaining the lead for the remainder of the night. WU stretched the margin to 20 two different times, leading by as much as 22 at the 4:23 mark.
AJ Sawyers provided the last four points for Widener, cementing the 13-point win.
