CHESTER, Pa. ā The Widener University field hockey team outshot Albright 23-13, but the Pride fell to the Lions 1-0 in a MAC Commonwealth battle that went to penalty shoot out on Wednesday night.
How it happened
WU fired off six shots in the first quarter while limiting Albright to just one. Defense ruled the second quarter as the teams generated four total shots. They went into the half tied at zero.
The Albright keeper made two crucial saves in the third quarter, keeping the game even. Albright had the best scoring opportunity of the quarter when it was rewarded penalty stroke with five minutes remaining.
Sabrina Roberto dove to her right side, stopping the shot for her first save of the night.
Still scoreless in the fourth, Roberto came up big again, saving another penalty stroke to preserve the tie. A last second shot from
Lexie Eberly was saves and the teams went into overtime.
Jackie Daniels had a breakaway scoring chance in the first overtime period and missed just over the top of the cage.
Madi Radnoff tallied a huge defensive save to close out OT 1. Shots were even at two in OT 2 but strong goalkeeping on both sides forced a shootout.
Albright scored twice in the best of five shootout, sealing the win. Roberto made two saves.
Up next
Widener returns to action on Saturday, October 26 for senior day against Arcadia. Game time is scheduled for 12:00 noon with a ceremony honoring the seniors taking place beforehand.
