READING, Pa. – The Widener University women's basketball team turned in a superlative defensive performance as the Pride topped the Albright Lions in a crucial MAC Commonwealth battle, 61-40 on Wednesday night.
BY THE NUMBERS
- WU turned in one of its best defensive efforts of the season, forcing 21 turnovers while committing a season-low eight. The Pride also held Albright to 35.3 percent shooting including 1-for-12 from three-point range.
- Devan Rimmer led the Blue and Gold offensively with 23 points, connecting on 11-of-12 from the free throw line.
- Erin Phelan continued her strong freshman season with 18 points and five rebounds.
- Kyra Schenk led Widener with six boards in the contest.
- WU got a strong effort from its bench as nine different players logged at least 10 minutes.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Pride got off to a slow start as the Lions led 6-2 at the midway mark of the opening period before Widener embarked on a 22-2 run that bridged the quarter break, going up 24-8.
- During the eight-minute stretch, defense set the tone for the Blue and Gold who forced six turnovers and held Albright to 1-for-9 shooting.
- The remainder of the half was evenly matched with WU taking a 35-20 lead into intermission.
- Widener resumed its attack to start the third period, scoring eight of the first 10 points, extending to 43-22 just past the three minute mark of the stanza.
- The Blue and Gold continued to push the lead as the half went on to secure the victory.
