CHESTER, Pa. – Bolstered by a youthful attack and solid defense on the back line, the Widener University field hockey team picked up its first win of the season, blanking the Drew Rangers 3-0 in the home opener on Tuesday night.
After a scoreless first 25 minutes, the Pride broke through with the opening goal of the game at the 25:24 mark. Widener had the better of play in the opening frame, outshooting Drew 16-0.
The Blue and Gold expanded the lead midway through the second half and put the game away on a successful penalty stroke in with just more than 13 minutes to play. For the game, Widener held a 25-3 advantage in shots, including 20-1 in attempts on target.
FIRST HALF NOTES
- The opening stanza was played nearly entirely in Widener's attacking end of the field.
- At the 25:24 mark, the Pride notched the first goal of the contest as a pair of freshman connected on the marker. Madi Radnoff sent a ball from the right corner to the top of the arc where Jesse Schlosser took it past the keeper one-on-one to make it 1-0 WU.
SECOND HALF NOTES
- The Pride doubled its lead 15 minutes into the frame as Kelly Ramsdale took a pass down the middle from Jordana Ambros. Ramsdale made quick work of the shot and found the back of the cage for her first goal of the season.
- Widener extended the lead to 3-0 as Radnoff posted her first career goal at the 56:43 mark on a penalty stroke.
- Victoria Byrne needed to make one save late in the contest, coming off a penalty corner to preserve the shutout win.

Widener returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Wilkes. Game time is slated for 5:00 p.m.
