Season-High 17 Goals Pushes @WidenerLacrosse Past Arcadia

CHESTER, Pa. Gavin Kirkwood and Brady Franks each had a hat trick as the Widener University men's lacrosse team opened MAC Commonwealth play with a resounding 17-10 win against the Arcadia Knights on Wednesday evening.
 
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Kirkwood led the Pride with five goals and two assists.
  • Franks was close behind with four goals and two helpers. He also picked up four ground balls.
  • Robbie Johnson scored his first two goals of the year for the Pride.
  • Paz Gismondi had a goal and three assists. John Petriccione and Mitchell Phillips each scored once and aided another tally.
  • Timmy Certeza, Nick DiIorio, and Kyle Groark each found the back of the net for the Widener.
  • Matt Horton made eight saves in net.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Goals were plentiful early in the contest as the two teams combined for 11 scores in the opening quarter.
  • After Arcadia went up 3-1 less than five minutes in, the Pride responded as goals from Petriccione, DiIorio, and Kirkwood gave Widener a 4-3 lead at the 8:37 mark.
  • The two teams traded the next couple of markers before Johnson scored his second of the period with 47 seconds left, giving the Blue and Gold a 6-5 edge at the end of a quarter.
  • Widener extended the lead as the second period opened with tallies from Franks and Gismondi pushing the lead to three.
  • The Knights sliced the advantage to 8-7 before the Pride scored two of the final three goals of the half, taking a 10-8 lead into intermission.
  • The defense clamped down for both sides to start the third quarter as neither squad scored until Kirkwood broke the ice, finding the back of the net off a feed from Franks with 5:54 remaining. Arcadia made a game of it again, scoring just before the end of the period to cut the lead to two heading into the final 15 minutes.
  • Widener dominated the fourth quarter, scoring the first six goals of the frame, two by Franks to seal the win.

UP NEXT
The Pride takes to the field again on Friday, April 6 when it hosts Hood in a MAC Commonwealth battle. Opening faceoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
