Strong Defensive Effort Leads Widener Past Lycoming on Senior Night

CHESTER, Pa. – Three players scored multiple goals as the Widener University men's lacrosse team downed the Lycoming Warriors in a MAC Commonwealth contest on Senior Night from Quick Stadium.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Brady Franks led the Pride with four goals and two assists.
  • Paz Gismondi added a hat trick along with two assists, a ground ball and a turnover.
  • Kevin Kerby found the back of the net twice while Ben Davis, Liam O'Donnell, and Gavin Kirkwood each scored once.
  • The Blue and Gold held Lycoming scoreless for a stretch of more than 25 minutes from the second through the fourth quarter.
  • Bryan Mauser came on in relief in goal and made a career-high three saves.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After the Warriors scored the first two goals of the contest, Widener responded as tallies by Kirkwood, Franks, Gismondi, and Kerby, the last three coming in a span of 2:23 put WU up 4-2 at the 2:13 mark of the opening period.
  • Lycoming posted the majority of the scoring in the second quarter, netting a trio of goals to go up by one before Gismondi found the back of the net for the second time with just less than four minutes left in the half to send the teams into intermission knotted at 5-5.
  • Defense ruled the third period as neither team cracked the scoreboard for the first 10 minutes. Widener broke through first as Kerby netted his second of the night at the 4:43 mark. Franks made it a two-goal lead just before the end of the frame, scoring with 23 seconds left, just beating the shot clock.
  • There would be no long wait in the fourth for a goal as off the faceoff, Anthony Paone fed Kerby who found rope just seven seconds into the new quarter.
  • The Blue and Gold then got some offense from a couple of unexpected sources as Davis scored his first of the season at the 13:05 mark followed by O'Donnell turning defense into offense two minutes later, getting a feed from Robbie Johnston who had cleared the ball off a turnover.
