GRANTHAM Pa, - Three players scored in double figures, but the Widener University women's basketball team was defeated 67-51 by the nationally-ranked Messiah College Falcons on Thursday evening.
HIGHLIGHTS
FIRST QUARTER NOTES
- Ireland set the momentum early and opened the scoring for the Pride with a layup 37 seconds into the frame.
- The visitors then used a 9-2 run that was capped with an Ireland 3-pointer to put them ahead 11-5 with 6:07 on the clock.
- Messiah began to chip away scoring three unanswered to cut the gap down to one, but a layup from Izzy Hamlin secured the Pride's lead as they ended the quarter with a slight 13-11 advantage.
SECOND QUARTER NOTES
- The first minute was scoreless until a Messiah 3-pointer out of the hands of Maci Thornton put the Falcons ahead 14-13.
- Kyra Schenk knotted the game at 17s when she connected on a layup with 6:32 remaining.
- Messiah responded with an 8-2 run to give them a six point edge.
- A Rimmer 3-pointer cut the deficit back down to one with 2:15 on the board but the hosts could not be stopped as they headed into half time with a five point lead.
THIRD QUARTER NOTES
- Messiah used a 12-2 run to jump ahead by 13 with 3:45 on the clock.
- Despite a Rimmer 3-pointer, the Pride could not regain momentum as they trailed 52-35 heading into the fourth quarter.
FOURTH QUARTER NOTES
- The fourth quarter was more tightly contested as Widener held a slight 16-15 point advantage.
- Gallagher led the Pride with six points.
