FREDERICK, Md. – The Widener University women's basketball team took a trip to Hood College on Saturday afternoon and walked out of BB&T Arena with another win under its belt, defeating the Blazers 78-69. The Pride now sits at 9-1 on the season.
The Blue and Gold controlled the entire game, never giving up its lead.
Devan Rimmer got it going for Widener in the first quarter, scoring six points and recording two assists. WU hit three shots from beyond the arc in the first 10 minutes.
Erin Phelan went off in the second quarter. The freshman had 15 points and five rebounds. She was perfect from the line in the quarter, going three-for-three. Despite losing the third quarter, the Pride kept the Blazers from closing the gap and entered the fourth quarter with a nine point advantage. The final 10 minutes were extremely high-scoring. Phelan added 13 more points.
Emily Hardy and
Madison Ireland were huge on the boards, grabbing seven total rebounds between the two of them. Solid free-throw shooting towards the end of the game cemented the final score.
Game Highlights:
- Phelan set a new career-high in points with 27. She also had 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the year and led the team in steals with three. She showed her clutch-ness and composure at the line, going 11 for 11.
- Rimmer had another game with 20+ points, finishing with 24. She had eight rebounds and hit 50 percent of her three-point attempts.
- Ireland stuffed the stat sheet once again, recording seven points, eight assists, and 10 rebounds.
- Emily Hardy went for six points and nine boards.
- The Pride dominated the glass, outrebounding the Blazers 61-49.
- WU shot 41.2 percent from three.
- The Blue and Gold only missed four of its 27 free throws.

Widener returns home on Tuesday, December 11 for a matchup against local rival Swarthmore College. Game time is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
