WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Widener University football team scored 17 points off three King's turnovers as the Blue and Gold downed the Monarchs 41-25 to pick up its third straight MAC win on an overcast Saturday afternoon.
The opening of the game could not have gone better for Widener as the Pride forced fumbles on the first two possessions for King's, leading to a pair of touchdown passes from
Mitchell Vierling, one each to
Pat Downey and Joey Bristow. Widener scored 10 more points in the quarter to take a 24-3 lead after 15 minutes. In the second quarter, WU used its longest drive of the season, eating more than eight minutes off the clock, scoring on a
Johnny Bauer TD run, taking a 31-10 lead into the locker room.
To start the second half, the Pride used a pair of fakes to score on the opening drive to make it 38-10. Later in the third,
Larry Eimer connected on his second field goal of the day for the final WU points. King's scored a pair of TD's in the fourth to cement the final score.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Defensively, Mario Scotese led the Pride with 15 tackles, two tackles for loss, a sack and a blocked punt.
- Topping the offensive attack was Donte' Harrell with 113 yards and a touchdown on nine carries.
- In his first career start, Vierling completed 16-of-29 passes for 164 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions.
- Eight different receivers caught a pass in the game, led by Bristow, who had four catches including his first career collegiate score. Ryan Gallagher and Downey each posted three grabs for 45 and 44 yards respectively.
- Shane Mulhern posted 15 tackles in the contest.
- Michael Raczak punted four times, averaging 42.8 yards per kick, hanging three of them inside the 20.
FIRST QUARTER NOTES
- The Pride took advantage of a pair of fumbles on the opening two drives of the games for the Monarchs. On the second play of the game, Mike Pawlowski sacked King's QB Tommy Clock. Jalen singleton fell on the ball to give Widener possession. Three plays later Vierling found Pat Downey for the first six points of the game.
- Early into the next Monarchs' drive, another fumble, this time forced by Brian Armstrong and recovered by Pawlowski led to a 14-yard pass from Vierling to Joey Bristow in the end zone, the first career score for Bristow, making it 14-0.
- After a King's field goal, the Blue and Gold took over at its own 37. Handing the ball to Donte' Harrell, the senior did the rest, taking 63 yards to the house, making it 21-3.
- Forcing a punt from King's on the next drive, special teams came up big as Scotese blocked the kick, giving WU the ball on its own 43. The Pride converted the drive into a field goal, pushing the advantage to 24-3.
- Vierling completed five passes in the first quarter to five different receivers.
SECOND QUARTER NOTES
- Widener forced King's into a punt on its first possession of the frame before embarking on its longest drive of the year in terms of both plays and time. The 14-play, 85-yard series took 8:21 off the clock, capped by a five-yard run by Johnny Bauer. On the drive, Harrell rushed for 51 yards and the Pride converted two fourth downs.
THIRD QUARTER NOTES
- Opening the second half, Widener received the kickoff and appeared to have the drive stalled twice. The first time, the Pride engineered a fake punt as Bauer ran for 10 yards on fourth-and-two. Later, the Blue and Gold lined up for a field goal before Vierling, acting as the holder, shoveled the ball to Jordan Powell for a six-yard score. It was Powell's first offensive touchdown since October 3, 2015.
- On the ensuing King's possession, Brian Armstrong came up with his third interception in as many games, leading to a Widener field goal.
- Bauer ran for 60 yards in the quarter and a touchdown on 10 carries.
FOURTH QUARTER NOTES
- The Monarchs posted the majority of their offense in the quarter, scoring twice and converting a two-point attempt.
- Widener was able to recover a pair of onside kicks in order to maintain the lead.
- Raczak boomed three punts for an average of 44.7 yards, putting two inside the 20-yard line.
