CHESTER, Pa. – The Widener University women's soccer team gave a nationally ranked opponent a stern test, but the Pride fell to the No. 24 Arcadia Knights 2-0 in a MAC Commonwealth matchup on Tuesday night.
Widener had the better of play in the opening minutes of the contest, pressuring the back line of the Knights defense. After Arcadia cleared the ball in the 12th minute, the Pride was unable to control in its own defensive third. Off the turnover, a quick tap left a Knights forward one-on-one against the keeper. The ensuing shot found the back of the net for the opening goal of the match.
The defense of the Blue and Gold held strong for the majority of the second half, leading to some counter attack chances. Widener's best opportunity came in the 65th minute when
Alyssa Dionisio centered the ball for
Brielle Errico in a 2-on-1 opportunity. With Errico closing in, the Arcadia keeper timed the move off her line perfectly to cut the angle and force the shot to skitter just wide to the right.
Arcadia put the game away late with a goal in the 80th minute.
Despite the setback,
Delaney Sabath stood out in goal, making a career-high eight saves in the contest.
The Pride returns to action on Saturday, October 6 when it travels to Hood for a MAC Commonwealth contest. Match time is slated for 1:00 p.m.
