Devan Rimmer and
Madison Ireland each scored in double figures, but the Widener University women's basketball team was upended 67-52 by the Albright Lions in a MAC Commonwealth contest on Saturday afternoon.
After trading baskets for the opening seven minutes. With the score tied at 12-12 near the close of the first, Albright wet on a 19-7 run to take a 31-19 lead before holding a 10-point lead at the break.
Opening the second half, the Pride cut the lead to 36-33 before the Lions scored eight of the next 10 points to close the third period up by nine. Albright extended its lead in the final five minutes of the game to cement the result.
HIGHLIGHTS
FIRST PERIOD NOTES
- The two squads matched baskets in the opening seven-plus minutes of play as a layup by Devan Rimmer knotted the score at 12-12 with 2:41 to go in the frame.
- Albright rallied to score the final points of the period to take a 15-12 lead at the end of the stanza.
- Madison Ireland led the Pride with five point in the quarter.
SECOND PERIOD NOTES
- The Lions carried the momentum from the end of the first period into the second, using a 19-7 run bridging the two quarters to take a 31-19 advantage with 1:26 left before halftime.
- Seven different players scored for Widener in the first half.
THIRD PERIOD NOTES
- The Blue and Gold battled back opening the second half, using a 12-5 run to chop a 10-point deficit at intermission to 36-33 on a Rimmer layup with just more than four minute left in the frame.
- Albright countered, going on an 8-2 spurt in the next three minutes to reestablish a nine point lead heading into the final period.
- Overall, Widener outscored Albright by a point in the 10 minute stretch.
FOURTH PERIOD NOTES
- The two teams traded scores through the midway mark of the quarter as a trey by Nikki Petri cut the lead to 54-44 with 4:35 to go.
- Albright went on a quick 6-0 run in the next two minutes to put the game out of reach.
- Rimmer netted 10 of her 14 points in the second half.
