Women's Soccer Opens Conference Play with Victory at Lycoming

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Widener University women's soccer team scored a pair of second half goals as the Pride won its MAC Commonwealth opener 2-1 against the Lycoming Warriors on Saturday afternoon. The Blue and Gold is now 7-2-0 overall and 1-0-0 in conference.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The two teams were scoreless in the first half, but the Pride had the better of play with a 5-1 advantage in shots including 4-0 in attempts on target.
  • Early in the second stanza, Widener got on the board as just into the beginning of the 49th minute, Alexa Byers drilled a shot that was deflected, but went right to Eva Reyes who pounced on it and sent it past the keeper from six yards out.
  • The Blue and Gold added to the lead in the 76th minute as off a free kick, Abby Fenton collected a feed from Kimmy Lyons and drove it home from eight yards out. The goal would turn out to be crucial as Lycoming scored on a penalty kick with three minutes to go in the contest.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Widener held a 14-4 advantage in shots and had a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.
  • It was the fourth goal of the season for Reyes and the second for Fenton.
  • The assists for Byers and Lyons were each their first career points.
