Women's Soccer Tops Goucher for Fifth Win in a Row

CHESTER, Pa. – The Widener women's soccer team scored a goal in each half and recorded its fifth win in a row as the Pride topped the Goucher Gophers 2-0 at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium on Wednesday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Scoreless early in the 40th minute, Lauren Wilson gained possession at the top of the offensive third and sent a lead pass in for Shea Scannell. The junior corralled it, beat the last defender and powered the ball into the back of the net over the keeper.
  • The 1-0 lead intact, Widener increased the advantage in the 60th minute as Goucher tried to clear the ball. Mikaela Malofiy intercepted the attempt and lofted it towards the net, past the outstretched arms of the keeper and across the goal line for a 2-0 lead.
  • Widener continued to pressure throughout the game and maintained possession in the final half hour, rarely letting Goucher into the attacking zone.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Scannell's goal was her eighth of the season, the most for a Widener player since 2013.
  • Malofiy became the 10th different Pride player to find the back of the net this year. Five of those players have three goals or more.
  • Sam Thach made two saves in earning her second clean sheet of the year.
UP NEXT
Widener is off until Sunday, Sept. 24 when it travels to Penn State Abington for a 2:00 p.m. contest.
