GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. –
Victoria Byrne made a career-high nine saves, but the Widener University field hockey team was upended 3-1 at Gwynedd Mercy on Tuesday night.
The Pride got the scoring started when
Eliza Newlin continued her torrid scoring pace coming off a feed from
Jackie Daniels at the 7:49 mark. The Griffins took the lead with a pair of penalty stroke goals four minutes apart winding down towards 10 minutes remaining in the frame. Byrne helped to keep Widener close, making six saves in the opening 35 minutes.
Byrne continued her strong play in the second half, making three more saves while surrendering just one goal.
Kayla Herr led the Pride with three shots on goal in the contest, two in the second half.
Widener is back in action on Thursday, Sept. 14 when it hosts Immaculata at Dixon Field. Game time is slated for 7:00 p.m.
