Kayla Herr recorded a hat trick and
Eliza Newlin notched a school record tying three assists as the Widener University field hockey team won for the third time in four games downing the Immaculata Mighty Macs 7-1 at Dixon Field on Thursday night.
KEY PLAYERS
- Herr delivered her first career hat trick, scoring once in the first half and twice in the second.
- Newlin set a career-high with three assists. She scored once, giving her goal in each of Widener's five games this season.
- Jackie Daniels tallied the first goal of her collegiate careers. Sam Scoma and Jordana Ambros each recorded a goal for the Blue and Gold.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Pride opened the game quickly, scoring just more than four minutes into the contest when Herr drove home a shot, coming off a penalty corner feed from Newlin.
- The Blue and Gold made it 2-0 at the 8:30 mark when Scoma scored her second of the season off a feed from Newlin.
- A pair of freshmen teamed up for the third Widener goal as Ambros passed the ball through the circle from the left before Daniels was able to send it into the back of the cage.
- After Immaculata scored to pull back to within two goals, the Pride extended the lead before halftime with Ambros scoring her third of the season as Scoma intercepted a pass and moved the ball through the middle before finding the freshman in front of the net.
- Newlin tallied her eighth goal of the year early in the second half, deflecting a cross from the right side.
- Herr finished the scoring for the night, first off a pass from Newlin on a penalty corner and then delivering a penalty stroke goal.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Herr currently stands ninth in Pride history with 19 goals and 52 points.
- With her three assists, Newlin tied the program record for helpers in a game. She also moved into 10th place all-time at Widener in both goals and points with 18 and 47 respectively. The Lewisburg, Pa. native currently leads the MAC with 20 points and is tied for the lead with eight assists.
