CHESTER, Pa. – The Widener women's soccer team used a goal in each half as the Pride opened its season with a 2-0 win against the Eastern Eagles at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium on Friday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Shea Scannell netted her first goal of the season on a penalty kick, drawn after a foul in the box following a beautiful through ball from Rachel Hafer.
- Still 1-0 midway through the second half, Brielle Errico gained the ball off an Eastern turnover and outran the defender, finishing her breakaway into the bottom left corner, doubling the Widener lead.
- Widener stayed solid in the defensive third, only yielding six shots for the match.
TURNING POINT
Holding a 1-0 lead and with the Eagles pressuring, the Pride won the ball off a turnover at midfield. Errico did the rest, beating the last defender to the ball before sneaking her shot inside the far post.
BY THE NUMBERS
- It was the second year in a row that Widener defeated Eastern in its opener.
- The Pride outshot the Eagles 13-6 including a 6-4 advantage in attempts on target.
