Boxscore FORT PIERCE, Fla. (March 8, 2017) – The Widener University baseball team fell short to nationally-ranked La Roche by a 3-2 score in 12 frames on Wednesday night in Florida.

Widener gained the lead early by scoring two runs in the top of the first inning. With the bases loaded, the Pride capitalized off a wild pitch to send senior Mike Elfreth (Washington Township, N.J.) home and put them up 1-0. Shortly after, senior Nick Enos (Williamstown, N.J.) followed up with an RBI to increase the Pride's lead to 2-0. Sophomore James Dougherty (Glenside, Pa.)  blanked the Red Hawks for the first five innings, yielding only two hits and striking out two.

After a scoreless five frames, La Roche fought back by scoring one run in the sixth to bring the score to 2-1. The Red Hawks' Luis Navedo attempted to steal home to tie the game, but senior catcher Glenn Seymour (Eagleville, Pa.) made the tag to keep the Pride ahead. Despite the deficit, the hosts did not quit and earned a run in the bottom of the ninth to send the game into extra innings.

Both teams went two more scoreless frames until the Red Hawks finally pulled ahead by ending the game in the bottom of the 12th with an RBI single.

Anthony Romano earned the win for the Red Hawks. He tossed two-thirds of an inning, allowing no runs, no hits, striking out one, and walking zero. Junior Matthew Guarino (Jackson, N.J.) took the loss for Widener. He went two-thirds of an inning, giving up one run and one hit.

The Pride (5-3) will return to action when they take on Wilkes tomorrow, March 9 at 5 p.m. in Fort Pierce, Fla.
