Softball Sweeps Immaculata

CHESTER, Pa. (March 29, 2017) – The Widener University softball team swept Immaculata on Wednesday evening. The Pride won the opener, 5-4, and the nightcap by an 11-5 decision.

The first game was tied at 1-1 early in the first inning until junior Lauren DelRomano (Broomall, Pa.) hit an RBI double in the third to send senior Ally Horvath (Chalfont, Pa.)  home and put the Pride ahead 2-1. With the score matched at two in the top of the fifth, Immaculata pulled ahead by hitting a homerun from Ashley Rey. Widener quickly regrouped from the deficit and put them back in the game with a homerun from junior Katie Steerling Middletown, Del.) to tie the score for the third time.

With two outs and Immaculata up by one in the bottom of the seventh inning, DelRomano hit her second RBI double of the day to advance the game into extra innings with a tied score of 4-4. After three more scoreless innings, Widener finally put the Mighty Macs away with an RBI from senior Nicole Burt (Staten Island, N.Y.) to end the game with a 5-4 victory.

Junior Katie Rabuck (Hegins, Pa.) earned the win in the circle for Widener and improved to 5-1 on the spring by throwing seven and one-third innings in which she gave up four hits and two runs. Immaculata's Nicole Kowalski went the distance and was charged with yielding one hit and one run over three frames.

Immaculata came out wanting revenge in the second game by opening the scoring in the second-frame with an RBI by Michaela Petito, however, Rabuck answered back with an RBI single to match the score 1-1. With a double from both freshman Carli Benozich (Drexel Hill, Pa.) and sophomore Liv Rogers (West Chester, Pa.), Widener was able to pull ahead 3-1 heading into the top of the fourth.

The visitors continued to try and claw back from the deficit by scoring four more runs, but it was not enough to defeat Widener as they scored six straight runs in the sixth inning.  DelRomano sparked the momentum for the Pride that inning with an RBI single that was quickly followed by Sterling's 2-RBI double to right center. Rogers hit a single to drive in two more runs before Benozich advanced to home on a passed ball for the last mark of the game.

Horvath earned the win in the circle for Widener and improved to 5-1 on the spring by hurling a complete game in which she gave up nine hits and five runs. Immaculata's Desiree Dinko went the distance and was charged with yielding five hits and six runs over one frame.
