READING, Pa. (March 25, 2017) – The Widener University baseball team swept Albright,7-0 and 10-2, in a double header Saturday afternoon at Kelchner Field.
After a scoreless first inning, junior
Mike Garofolo (Pitman, N.J.) put the Pride on the board first with a single up center field which drove in two runs. Keeping the momentum going, senior
Justin Czupryna (Roxbury, N.J.) stepped up to the plate next and hit an RBI double to center field which put Widener ahead 3-0.
Senior
Kyle McKelvy (Collegeville, Pa.) struck out two batters in the bottom of the second-frame to secure the early lead and senior
Nick Enos (Williamstown, N.J.) followed up at bat in the third-inning by hitting a double through left center to send senior
Mike Elfreth (Washington Township, N.J) home. After a blank fourth-frame, junior
Kyle Lowery (Norristown, Pa.), senior
Greg McDonough (Ambler, Pa.) and Czupryna each hit an RBI double throughout the remaining innings to pull away with the 7-0 victory in game one.
McKelvy picked up the win for Widener. He pitched five innings, allowed five hits, no runs, and only issued two walks. Matt Fisher was tagged with the loss. He pitched three innings, surrendered eight hits, four runs, had no strikeouts and did not issue a walk.
In game two, Widener started off the scoring in the top of the second-inning after sophomore
Stephen DeBellis (Marlton, N.J.) drove in Enos with a double down the left line.
Albright eventually tacked on a run with a single through the right side from Austin Roth bringing the score to 4-1. With the bases loaded in the sixth-frame, DeBellis came out aggressive hitting a homerun to pad Widener's lead 7-1. The scoring did not stop there as the visitors continued to stay hot in their last inning at bat. Junior
Joe Addvensky (Milford, Pa) hit an RBI single up the middle to drive in two runs and then later advanced on a fielder's choice for the third run in the frame.
Senior
Donovan Davis (Wallingford, Pa.) picked up the win on the mound for Widener. He pitched three innings, allowed three hits, no runs, and did not issue a walk. Shaun O'Reily was tagged with the loss. He surrendered nine hits, four runs, struck out two and did not issue a walk.
The Pride will be back in action on Tuesday, March 28 when they take on TCNJ home at 3:30 p.m.
