CHESTER, Pa. (March 23, 2017) – Juniors
Katie Sterling (Middletown, Del.) and
Lauren DelRomano (Broomall, Pa.) combined to hit three home runs in leading the Widener University softball team to a twinbill sweep of Cabrini on Thursday evening. The Pride won the opener, 6-2, and the nightcap by a 10-2 decision in six frames.
In addition, head coach
Fred Dohrmann picked up his 600th career victory as the pilot of the perennially successful program. His 600 victories are also the most wins by one coach in one sport in school history.
Cabrini (1-9) scored the first run of the opener when Jess Giordano blasted an RBI double to plate Alexandra Schell, but the Pride answered by scoring at least one run in four straight frames to take the lead. DelRomano hit a sacrifice bunt to even the score in the first, and senior
Ally Horvath (Chalfont, Pa.) reached on a catcher's interference call with the bases loaded that forced in classmate
Liz Antonucci (Nesconset, N.Y.) from third.
In the middle innings, Sterling and DelRomano padded Widener's lead by hitting solo shots over the wall in left to help build the cushion up to a comfortable 5-1 margin. Sterling then capped the scoring for the hosts in the sixth by singling in DelRomano with a rocket up the middle.
Junior
Katie Rabuck (Hegins, Pa.) picked up her second straight victory in the circle for Widener and improved her ledger to 2-1 this season. She struck out six, issued only one walk and allowed eight hits and one run which was earned in five and two-thirds innings of work. Cabrini's Giordano suffered the loss and dropped to 1-4 after giving up six runs, including five earned, and eight hits while fanning seven and issuing three walks.
Widener (6-4) led from wire-to-wire in the nightcap and wasted no time getting its offense started. A wild throw by Cavalier catcher Taylor Franchville attempting to gun down Horvath at third allowed the speedy senior to come home to put the Pride on the board. DelRomano then plated senior
Nicole Burt (Staten Island, N.Y.) on her second sacrifice bunt of the day to double the lead.
Cabrini attempted to rally and brought the deficit down to a single run on two occasions, but the Widener offense responded by scoring three times in the fourth and four more runs in the sixth to put the game away. Sterling, who went yard for the second time of the day in the third inning, and DelRomano stayed red hot by driving in runs on consecutive plays in the fourth frame before freshman
Carli Benozich (Drexel Hill, Pa.) would eventually single to score junior
Taylor Allen (North East, Md.) in the sixth and end the cold evening early due to the eight-run rule.
Horvath earned the win for Widener and moved her record ahead to 2-1 this spring by allowing four hits and two runs, including one earned, while striking out four in five frames of work. Cabrini's Taylor Gallagher was tagged with the setback and fell to 0-2. She issued four walks and yielded three hits along with four runs over three and one-third innings.
Widener, which has now won four straight games since returning from Florida, will next host Gwynedd Mercy for a twinbill tomorrow afternoon beginning at 3:30 p.m.
