Men’s Soccer Battles Hood to a 1-1 Draw; McKenna Nets Second Marker

CHESTER, Pa. – Junior Kevin McKenna registered his second goal of the season to help drive the Widener University men's soccer team to a 1-1 draw in double overtime against the Hood College Blazers on Tuesday evening at Leslie C. Quick Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Widener came out strong and went directly at the opposition from the opening whistle. The game's first shot was taken less than five minutes in when freshman Nick Sienkiewicz fired off a shot that was deflected by Hood. The Blazers opened the scoring in the 11th minute with a one-touch shot outside the 18-yard box, but again the Pride went right at Hood, immediately entering the attacking third and getting a shot off from freshman Shea Morgan just over a minute later. With almost no time left on the clock, Hood was able to find a header opportunity inside the box, however, freshman Danny Thompson stepped up and made a diving save to keep the Blazers from doubling their lead.

Coming out of half time, Widener continued to apply heavy pressure. McKenna got the Blue and Gold on the board after beating two defenders outside the 18 to create enough space for himself to loft the ball over the keeper's head and into the back of the net. With the game tied 1-1, both teams continued to create back-and-forth scoring opportunities, however, neither of the two could put one away and the match was sent into overtime.

The Pride were able to construct two chances from John Colbert and Shea Morgan, but both came up short as the match continued into double overtime. Colbert then nearly ended the match with a backwards volley inside the box, however, it struck off the crossbar and the game concluded in a 1-1 draw.

  • Widener out shot Hood 22-20 and had a 6-2 edge on corner kicks.
